How to make your own Bias Tape and sew it!

What is Bias Tape?
Bias tape is a narrow strip of fabric cut on the bias (diagonal to the grain) to give it extra stretch and flexibility. It’s ideal for finishing edges, creating ties, or adding decorative trim to garments and projects.

How to Make Your Own Bias Tape (videotutorial at the end of the blog)

1. Cut on the Bias:
To start, cut fabric strips at a 45-degree angle to the selvage. For standard double-fold bias tape, cut strips about 2 inches wide. The length depends on your project needs.

2. Join Strips:
If you need longer tape, join strips at a 90-degree angle with right sides together, stitch diagonally, then trim excess fabric and press open the seam.

3. Fold and Press:
To create double-fold tape, fold your strip in half lengthwise and press. Open it, then fold each long edge toward the center and press again. Finally, fold the strip in half and press once more.

Tricks for Sewing Bias Tape Neatly

  1. Pin or Clip: Use pins or clips to hold the bias tape in place around curves or straight edges for accurate placement.

  2. Use a Basting Stitch First: Baste the bias tape onto your project before stitching it permanently. This can help you keep everything smooth, especially on curves.

  3. Sew in Two Steps for a Clean Finish:

    • First, sew one edge of the tape to the wrong side of the fabric.
    • Then, fold it over the raw edge to the right side and topstitch close to the edge for a neat look.
  4. Press as You Go: Press the bias tape as you sew to help it lay flat and achieve a polished finish.

  5. Practice Mitered Corners: When working with corners, fold the tape to form a neat angle, press, and pin before sewing. Practice makes perfect!

  6. Trim Bulk on Curves: For tight curves, make small snips along the bias tape edge to help it sit smoothly without puckering.

Using Bias Tape Creatively

Bias tape can be a fun, functional design element! Use contrasting colors for visible edges, or make matching bias tape to blend seamlessly with your fabric. It’s perfect for necklines, armholes, apron edges, quilt borders, and even face masks!

With these tips, you’ll be able to make and apply bias tape like a pro, adding a polished touch to your sewing projects!
